Anxiety is the general name for the states of worry and tension that anyone can experience from time to time. When it becomes intense enough to disrupt daily life, sleep, relationships or work, seeking support can be meaningful.
How can it be recognised?
Anxiety can show up differently from person to person:
- Constant “what if” thoughts and a need to check or control
- Bodily signs: palpitations, shortness of breath, muscle tension, difficulty falling asleep
- Avoiding certain situations
- Difficulty making decisions and relaxing
These signs alone do not amount to a diagnosis. What you are experiencing, and what it means, is explored together in the sessions.
Anxiety in the psychodynamic approach
In this approach, anxiety is not treated only as a symptom to be removed, but as an experience connected to the relationships, worries and conflicts in a person’s life. In the sessions we look together at when the anxiety rises, which feelings it is tangled up with, and what it means for you.
How the process unfolds and how long it takes varies from person to person; no particular outcome is guaranteed.
Psychiatric support
If the symptoms are very intense, or if a medication assessment may be needed, you are referred to a psychiatrist. Prescribing medication is the role of a psychiatrist.
