Loss and Mourning

Mourning is a natural emotional process that follows a loss. A loss is not only the death of a person; the end of a relationship, a change of job or country, a health-related loss, or the disappearance of an expected possibility in life can also begin a process of mourning.

How is mourning experienced?

Mourning is experienced differently, and over different lengths of time, from person to person. Feelings such as sadness, anger, guilt, longing or a kind of numbness may come one after another or together. There is no right or wrong way to mourn.

When might it be meaningful to seek support?

  • When daily life is disrupted for a long time after the loss
  • When it feels hard to talk or think about the loss
  • When you cannot find anyone to share your feelings with

These statements alone do not amount to a diagnosis. What you are experiencing, and what it means, is explored together in the sessions.

In the psychodynamic approach

In this approach, mourning is approached by understanding what the loss means to the person and how it connects with the relationship that was lived. The sessions offer a space to talk about your loss and the feelings around it at your own pace. The process varies from person to person, and no particular outcome is guaranteed.
