Perfectionism

Perfectionism is setting very high and hard-to-meet standards for oneself or one’s work. To a degree this can mean care and effort; but when the standards begin to make a person feel constantly inadequate, they can strain daily life and relationships.

How can it appear?

  • Difficulty finishing or starting a task
  • Being very uncomfortable with the thought of making a mistake
  • Never being able to see what has been done as good enough
  • Criticising oneself harshly

These statements alone do not amount to a diagnosis; they can appear in different ways from person to person.

In the psychodynamic approach

In this approach, perfectionism is considered together with how a person was seen in important relationships, what expectations were placed on them, and how they came to take those expectations in. In the sessions we look together at what these standards mean for you and what place they have in your life. The process varies from person to person, and no particular outcome is guaranteed.
