Self-confidence is the general shape of how a person evaluates themselves and the trust they have in themselves. These evaluations form over time, together with the relationships we live through; so it is hard to think about self-confidence difficulties apart from a person’s past relationship experiences.
How can it appear in daily life?
- A tendency to constantly compare oneself with others
- Difficulty voicing one’s own needs
- Needing others’ approval more than feels comfortable
- Difficulty valuing one’s own efforts or achievements
These statements alone do not amount to a diagnosis. How self-confidence difficulties appear varies from person to person.
In the psychodynamic approach
In this approach, self-confidence difficulties are explored by trying to understand how a person’s beliefs about themselves and their relationship experiences took shape. The sessions offer a space to think together about where and how your view of yourself formed. The process varies from person to person, and no particular outcome is guaranteed.
